How I work

I often reflect on how I show up in my work. In case we have the opportunity to collaborate, here's a peek into how I make decisions and build with others!

I care about the why

I think it's important to be aligned on the why before we get into the how. Understanding what we're solving and for whom gets everyone on the same page about what success looks like and why it matters.

...And quality along the way

As we move to the how, I’m comfortable with disagreement and trying different approaches. But I’ll always advocate for user quality. We earn our users’ attention and trust, and they deserve polished experiences.

I'm organized

I care about internal quality, too. I think clear documentation is important for being able to understand and build upon each other's work (especially asynchronously). I create detailed briefs and decision artifacts, even when navigating a nebulous project.

I speak up

I think honesty, shared kindly, is key to healthy teams. I'll speak up when something isn't clicking for me or I see something differently, and I'm drawn to people who do the same. It takes mutual respect and a dash of courage! But I think it makes collaboration more effective and gratifying.

I strive to ship small

I've learned this one the hard way (and am still working on it!). Building something hefty can be confusing to measure, clunky to iterate on, and disconnected from what users will actually do. Now I challenge myself to build small and have a tighter iteration loop.

I look for the data

I ground decisions in data (when possible*). My favorite sources are behavioral analytics and direct conversations with users. If we're making a change that impacts users in a significant way, I'm going to be curious about the data we're basing it on.

But I trust my instincts

*Sometimes the data doesn't exist yet, or it's pointing in different directions. To keep things moving so we can learn, I've gotten comfortable trusting my gut. (P.S. I'll be transparent when that's part of my decision making.)

If you've made it this far, thank you for being curious about how I work! I'm always evolving and so will this list.
